According to Tamil calendar ‘Thiruppavai’ is that time which comes in the month of Maarghazi or Dhanu. Thiruppavai is considered as a auspicious occasion for Tamil people from southern part of India. Thiruppavai is celebrated by Tamil peoples here with a great joy. In Thirupavai times people goes for Bhajans and they listen Thiruppavai songs on radio and TV etc.

Andal Thiruppavai or Thiruppavi :

Thirty stanzas collection written in Tamil language by Godai, in praise of lord Krishna, it is called Thiruppavai. A religious Brahmin lady Vishnucitta lived in Villiputra, near Madurai. She daily goes to a local temple for worship. One day she find a baby lying under a Tulsi plant in the garden. Vishnucitta realize that it is a god gift and she named her ‘Godai’.

Vishnucitta told stories and sang a songs to her of ‘Lord Krishna’. Slowly, a love intensified in Godai for Lord Krishna. Godai decide to marry to Krishna. She made ornaments of garland to wear and she was imagine her as a bride of Krishna. So, in the memory of Godai’s love to Krishna, Thiruppavai is celebrated by Tamil devotees with happiness. That girl Godai known as a ‘Andal’. So, in the memory of Godai’s love to Krishna, Thiruppavai is celebrated by Tamil people.
