Bohag Bihu of Assam :
Bihu is a very popular festival of Assam. Bihu is the heart of Assam culture Bihu is celebrated as New Year on April 15. Bihu is the symbol of Assamese cultural and festivities. Every person waits whole year for this festival to enjoy. The first day of
Bihu is called Goru Bihu or cow Bihu. In Goru Bihu the cows are washed and then prepared for worshiped.
There is 3 Bihu’s festival. It is Bohag Bihu in April, Kati Bihu in October/ November, and Magh Bihu in January. Bihu festival celebrates three seasons of spring. Bohag Bihu is the most important Bihu of all three.
The Bohag Bihu celebrates the greatest enjoyment in the spring season. Bohag Bihu is also known as “Rangoli Bihu” or the festival of the fun, and Magh Bihu is also known as “Bhogali Bihu” or the festival of food. The Kati Bihu is also known as “Kongaali Bihu” or the festival of the poor.
Bohag Bihu is the new year of Assam calendar and is celebrated whole month. A day before the New Year Goru Bihu is celebrated. The cattle’s are worshiped. They have taken down to river for a bath. Bihu songs are pepa, gogona, dhol and Taal etc. on the occasion of Bohag Bihu many delicious Assamese recipes are cooked at home. It is celebrated in whole world by different name. It is a time of joy and get together. The ladies make sweets, traditional food made of rice and coconut. On this day people wear new clothes, and they celebrate the New Year with fresh energy. On third day of Bihu, statues of God are worshiped at homes.
