Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi. It is one of the main Hindu festivals as this is the birthday of Lord Ganesha who is the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati.

Ganesha Chaturthi:

During this festival, Lord Ganesha is believed to shower his blessings on all his devotees on earth by bestowing his presence of earth. Ganesha is worshipped as the God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. This is the reason that no auspicious occasion begins without his pooja and his blessings. At the beginning of every major task in a person’s life, Ganesha is worshipped first.

The festival of Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated in the month of Bhaadrapada according to the Hindu calendar. The day is observed on the shukla chaturthi or the fourth day of waxing moon period. Usually the date according to Western calendar falls between August 20 and September 22. The festival of Gamesha Chaturthi lasts for ten days.

It begins of forth day of waxing moon while it ends on the fourteenth day of waxing moon period. This day is called Anant Chaturdashi. Though the festival is celebrated across the country, it is most elaborate in western and southern part of the country. The festival is also celebrated outside the country in Nepal. The Hindus in the United States, Canada and Fiji also celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi with enthusiasm.

The artistic clay models of Ganesha are made about two to three months prior to the festival. They are well decorated and give various poses by the artisans. The size of Ganesh idols many vary according to the choice of people. The festival begins with the installation of Ganesha idol in homes where a priest invokes God by chanting mantas. The festivals comes to an end on the eleventh day when the statue of taken to river or sea through processions and immersed in waters.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a very famous festival of India and is celebrated by Hindus all over the world with full enthusiasm. This festival is also called as ‘Vinayak Chaturthi’ and is celebrated as birthday of Lord Ganesha, son of Shiva and Parvati. This festival falls in the month of Bhadra according to Hindu calendar which means mid-August to mid September according to Gregorian calendar. Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations:

People used to buy idols of Lord Ganesha before start of this festival. You can see Ganesh idols of different sizes available in market. After bringing the idol at home, people decorate it with flowers and lights. Then they worship Lord Ganesha using flowers, rice, coins, etc. After completing pooja, they offer sweets to their family members and guests.

Ganesh puja can be performed easily by saying Ganesh mantras and aarti with all family members or you can also call a priest to perform this puja. Aarti is performed in both morning and evening and after this, flowers, kumkum and haldi are offered to women. Prasad is distributed to all people present there. The special sweet dish prepared during the celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi is ‘Modak’.

So, in this way, Ganesha is worshiped for 10 days, from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to Ananta Chaturdashi. On the nest day of Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesh idol is immersed in sea or river by taking it through different streets of the city. People dance, sing and shout the final procession ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’ while taking the idol towards the sea. It is believed that, with this Lord Ganesh takes away all the misfortunes of all man with him. so this festival is celebrated with full fun and zeal by all people.
