Gangaur is a colorful and one of the most important festivals of the people of Rajasthan. Gangaur is celebrated in the Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Gangaur is celebrated during March- April. The word Gangaur, means ‘Gan’stands for ‘Lord Shiva’ and ‘Gaur’ stands for ‘Gauri’ or goddess Parvati.

This festival is held in the honor of Goddess Parvati, as she stands for marital love, strength, courage, power and excellence. It starts from first day of Chaitra month, the day after Holi and is celebrated for 18 days.

It also comes in the end of winter season and the coming of spring season. Women and girls survey fast during this joyful time and eat only once in a day. In Gangaur images of Gauri and Isar (Lord Shiva) are made with the clay and decorated very beautifully. This festival is celebrated by womenfolk with great eagerness.

Gangaur appropriately reflects the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan and is celebrated with great display and show in Bikaner, Jodhpur, Marathwara and Jaisalmer. Gangaur Festival is also practical at some places in Gujarat.  This parade is

start by a colorful show of elephants, chariots, bullock carts and folk dance. People of different caste and creed come to watch and to be a part of the parade. Gangaur is also a good time of year to select a life partner.
