is famously known as Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birth place of Lord Krishna. According to the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana, Mathura was founded by Shatrughna in the Treta Yuga. Shatrughna was the younger brother of Lord Rama. Later Mathura was ruled by King Kama, who was the maternal uncle of Lord Krishna.

According to the Hindu mythologies, King Kamsa came to know about a divine prophecy. The prophecy told of Kamsa being slain by his sister Devki’s eighth son Krishna. Kamsa immediately imprisoned Devki and her husband Vasudeva. He kept on killing one by one all their children.

When Lord Krishna was born, a miracle happened, all the guards went to sleep and the prison gates opened up. Vasudeva then carried the newborn baby to safety by crossing the wild Yamuna river in midnight. Lord Krishna grew up as a divine personality and finally killed tyrant Kamsa and became the ruler of Mathura. This is how the divine prophecy came true.

Vrindavan is one of the most holy places in Mathura. It is the place where Lord Krishna spent most of his childhood. This place is associated with numerous myths and legends. There are several ancient as well as modern temples and shrines in Vrindavan which are visited by thousands of devotees from different parts of India as well as different parts of the world throughout the year.

One of the most significant temples in Vrindavan is the large temple complex, which is located in the heart of Mathura. This temple is home to several smaller temples and also consists of an old prison in which Kamsa imprisoned Devki and Vasudeva. Lord Krishna was born in this prison and several devotees stand in a long queue to see this prison.

Vishram Ghat is another place of significance in Mathura. This is the place where Lord Krishna took a rest after killing Kamsa.
