Maha Kumbh Mela Timings:

The ‘Kumbh Fair’ takes place when the planet Jupiter enters Aquarius, According to astrologers. Kumbha (Kumbha means pot) Mela (means fair) is a sacred Hindu rituals. Devotees, saints/sadhus come from all over the world to take this holy bath in Yamuna and the mythological Saraswati at Parayag (Sangam).

According to the Puranas ( Indian Scriptures) to save the nectar from falling into the hands of the demons, the demigods hid it in four places on the earth, Prayag (Allahabad), Hardwar, Ujjain, and Nasik at the time of Churning of a milk ocean.

At each of the hiding places, a drop of immortal nectar landed on the earth. since then these four places are believed to have mystical power.

In the eight century, Shankara, The prominent Indian saint, popularized the Kumbh Mela among the common people.

Shankara established special importance to the opportunity of associating with saintly persons while at Kumbha Mela. The normal Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 4 years. The Ardh (half) Kumbh Mela is celebrated every six years at Haridwar and Prayag. The Purna (complete) Kumbh Mela takes place every twelve years at four places (Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik).

The Maha (great) Kumbh Mela which comes after 12 ‘Purna Kumbh Melas’, or 144 years, is held at Allahabad.
