Raksha Bandhan is a festival associated with love between brother and sister.  This festival is a celebration of bond of affection between brothers and sisters. On this day, siblings pray for the well-being of each other and pray for their happiness and success.

Meaning of Raksha Bandhan is ‘bond of protection’. So, on this day, a promise is made by brothers to their sisters that they will save her from all troubles and evils and sisters pray to God for the safety of their brothers. This festival is celebrated on the day of Shravan Purnima which generally falls in the August month according to Hindu calendar.

Preparations for this festival start much in advance. So many colourful and beautiful rakhis are made available in market almost before a month of this festival. You can find almost every shop filled with rakhi gifts and sweets to attract customers.

On the festival day, people wake up early morning. After taking bath, they wear new clothes and worship together. After that, sisters perform aarti of their brothers and put tika on his forehead. Then she ties a silk thread called Rakhi on his brother’s wrist and offers sweets to his brother. While following all these traditions, she prays for the happiness of her brother. Brothers give beautiful gifts to her sisters and also promise to save her from any difficulty.

After that, whole family together enjoy tasty food and delicious sweets. They dance together, have party and enjoy the day. It is a very memorable day for people who are far away from their family for any reason. These people can express their feelings by sending email and rakhi cards through internet.
