The Enchanting Epic Ramayana:

Lord Ram

Lord Ram

Ramayana is one of the most significant ancient Sanskrit epics of India. It was originally written by a Hindu sage named Valmiki. Ramayana describes the duties of relationships and portrays ideal characters such as an ideal father, ideal son, ideal wife, ideal brother, ideal servant and ideal king. Ramayana basically means Rama’s Journey.

It consists of seven books with 24,000 verses and 500 sargas (cantos). Ramayana narrates the story of Lord Rama, who is the avatar of Lord Vishnu. His wife is abducted by the demon king of Lanka, Ravana. The chief characters of Ramayana are Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, Bharata, Hanuman, Sugreeva and Ravana.

According to Ramayana Lord Rama was the son of King Dasaratha. Dasaratha once in his hunting expedition mistakenly kills a boy named Shravana Kumar, whose father puts a curse on Dasaratha that he will die from the grief of separation from his son. This curse then results into Lord Rama going for 14 years of exile with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana.

While on an exile, Sita is abducted by Ravana, the king of Lanka. He forcibly takes her with him on his Pushpaka vimana to Lanka. Lord Rama along with his brother Lakshmana takes a journey in pursuit of Sita. On their way they get to meet Jatayu, who was badly injured in a fight with Ravana, while trying to rescue Sita. Before dying, Jatayu tells them the direction in which Ravana took Sita.

Further on their way Lord Rama comes across Sugriva, who later plays a major part in the war by helping Lord Rama with his Vanara army. Out of the Vanaras, Hanuman is the most significant character in Ramayana. He was the great devotee of Lord Rama and several times proved his loyalty and devotion towards him. After reaching Lanka, Lord Rama is engaged in a fierce war with Ravana, in which Ravana is finally killed by him and Sita is rescued.
