According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, Ravana was the king of Lanka. To take revenge from Lord Rama and Lakshmana for cutting off the nose of his sister Surpanakha, Ravana kidnaps Sita, wife of Lord Rama. Lord Rama along with his brother Lakshmana and his trusted allies invade Lanka and rescues his wife Sita by killing Ravana and his army of demons.

being with ten heads (Dasagriva), which is a reference to him having a deep knowledge of 6 Upanishads and 4 Vedas. As a result of which he was as powerful as ten scholars combined. He also had a thorough knowledge of political science and Ayurveda.

Lord Brahma had blessed with a boon, according to which he had the nectar of immortality stored under his navel. This made him invincible for the enemies. Ravana is known by several names such as Ravanaeshwaran, Dasis Ravana, Raavan, Lankeshwar, Ravan and Ravula.

He was of Brahmin as well as Daitya ancestry due to which he is often considered as BrahmaRakshasa.

Rishi Vishrava was the father of Ravana and princess Kaikesi was his mother.  Ravana had three brothers Vibhishana, Kumbhakarna and Ahiravana. Ravana had a wife named Mandodari.

She was known for her beauty and wisdom. When Lord Rama was in exile with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, Ravana kidnaps Sita and takes her with him to Lanka. Lord Rama and Lakshmana then head for a journey in pursuit of Sita.

In their search for Sita, they meet several beings and devotees with whom they form an alliance and invade Lanka. A fierce war takes place between the Vanara army of Lord Rama and Ravana’s army of demons. Ravana is humiliated in war by several defeats and is finally killed by Lord Rama, and Sita is rescued.
