Lord Narsingh is one of the major deities of Hindu religion. Every year in the month of Vaishakha Shri Narsingh Jayanti is celebrated. This festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. According to the legends, it is believed that Shree Narsingh, avatar of Lord Vishnu appeared to protect his devotee Prahlada and killed Hiranyakashyap, the demon king. Shri Narsingh blessed Prahlada and said that anyone who will take a vrat (fast) on this sacred day will be blessed. Shri Narsingh is often regarded as a god of power and victory.
Prahlada used to worship Lord Vishnu, but his father Hiranyakashipu was against it. Hiranyakashyap wanted to kill his son for worshipping Lord Vishnu, but failed every time he tried to kill him. Eventually Prahlada is saved from his father by Shri Narsingh, who was the half- lion, half- man avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Shri Narsingh Jayanti Vrat – Take a vrat (fast) on this sacred day to be blessed :
Devotees celebrate this festival by keeping a vrat (fast) which is followed by worshipping Shri Narsingh at dusk by abhishek and archana. Those who keep a vrat should donate clothes, sesame seeds, gold and other things during this day. It is believed that those who worship Lord Narsingh in this auspicious day with true devotion are relieved of all their sinful deeds.
The Narshimha Mandir of Tadavas village (Jaipur) is popular for its grand celebration of Shri Narsingh Jayanti. Each year this festival is celebrated in this temple in the month of Vaishakha.
Thousands of devotees from neighboring villages as well as other parts of India flock to this place for taking part in the festival. A special Prasad is offered to the deity in this festival, which is later distributed among the worshippers. This special prasad consists of chana, panaka, seasonal fruits and wet moong.
This year Shri Narsingh Jayanti will be celebrated on 13 May 2014.
