Sindhu is the river Indus, and Sindhu Darshan Festival is celebrated to give honour to the grand Indus River and the military men who died guarding its international boundaries. The Sindhu Darshan Festival is celebrated in Leh in Ladakh in the month of June, every year.

Sindhu Darshan Festival of Ladakh

The Sindhu Darshan festival was first celebrated in 1977 where people from different cities took part in the celebrations. It is in tribute to the longest flowing River Indus that flows through the desolate lands of Ladakh. Sindhu Darshan festival is a very auspicious occasion where the devotees offer the offerings to the River Indus. The celebrations also take place by the banks of the River Indus where the disciples offer their prayers and take a dip in the river.

The Sindhu Darshan festival helps in disseminating and popularizing the Ladakh handiwork. The Sindhu Darshan festival is organised by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to promote the rich and beautiful culture of the people of Ladakh.  The river symbolises mutual concord and oneness among the people. This is the festival where one gets to see the various colours and lights of celebration. A common centre has been especially created for the celebration of Sindhu Darshan Festival.

Sindhu Darshan festival is also celebrated to pay respects to the soldiers who died protecting boundaries of India, Siachin, Kargil and other such boundaries. The River Indus which originates in Tibet flows through the different states and territories symbolised the oneness and national integrity and communal concord between the people of India.

The best time to visit Ladakh is during the Sindhu Darshan festival. This is when Ladakh is most lively, with lots of celebrations, and festivities, good food, fun and frolic and lots of visitors come and visit Ladakh which not becomes lively but also helps endorse the rich and vibrant heritage and culture of Ladakh.
