Music is the soul of life for many people and if the music is devotional, there is nothing more divine than this music. The bhajans are the soulful devotional songs that have deep roots in the Indian traditions. The bhajans are a source of expressing the deep love and faith in God by the people. There are many facets of this true love for the Almighty. The bhajans are often sung by groups of people or devotees.

The ground work of bhajans is present in the Sama Veda of Hinduism. This is the fourth Veda of Hindus. The bhajans often are the anecdotes of lves of some great saints or Gods and their heroic acts on earth. The languags of bhajans is easy and colloquial and therefore one and all are able to easily pick up the music and tone. There is usually a leader of the group when bhajans are sung in groups. There are fixed tunes for bhajans and the words are repeated so often that they become easy to learn. In Hinduism, it is believed that an expecting mother must listen to bhajans so that the child is able to learn good things of life while he is still in the womb. The bhjans are supposed to be an integral part of the traditional value system in India.

There are different types of bhajans. If we look at the history of bhajans, we realize that the genre of bhajans has come a long way. There are Goratknathi, Nirguni, Vallabhapanthi, Madhura-bhakti, and Ashtachhap sects of Hinduism and each of these sects are known to have some specific bhajans associated with them. Also, there are particular styles of singing bhajans for each sect. Bhajans of Tulsidas, Surdas, Meera Bai and Kabir are still very populay among the masses across the country.
