Many Buddhists visit temples on Vesak to listen to monks give talks and religious Buddhists may spend all day in one or more temples. Some temples display a small statue of Buddha as a baby. The statue is placed in a hand basin filled with water and decorated with flowers. Visitors to the temple pour water over the statue. This symbolizes a pure and new beginning.

Many Buddhists pay special attention to Buddha’s teachings during Vesak. They may wear white best clothes and only eat vegetarian food on and around Vesak. Many people also give money, food or goods to organizations that help the poor, the old and those who are sick. Enslaved animals are bought and set free to display care for all living creatures as said by Buddha.

Some of the common features of this festival are the prayer meets, meditation in group, sermons, processions, statue worship of Lord Buddha, religious discourses, Buddhist scriptures recitations, offering of flowers and many more.

Bodhgaya: Bodhgaya is famously known as the place where Lord Buddha achieved enlightenment. There is a famous temple in Bodhgaya known as Mahabodhi Temple, which is host to several religious ceremonies and processions during this auspicious occasion. Several pilgrims and visitors visit this place from different parts of India and abroad during the festival. Devotees can be seen offering candles, fruits and flowers to Lord Buddha’s statues.

Sarnath: This is another significant place where Lord Buddha after enlightenment shared his learning to followers. This place is also famous for grand celebration of Buddha Purnima. Large fairs are organized and Buddha relics are displayed to the public during the procession.
