The state of Rajasthan is known as the Desert Jewel. There is a lot of liveliness and gaiety during the times when there are fairs and festivals in this state. The people of Rajasthan celebrate each occasion, whether it’s a change of season or harvest time, there is a reflection of genuine happiness in the music that is played. There is an element of genius in all their works of art and crafts and they have rich ascetic refinement.

Though the fairs and festivals are organized all round the year in Rajasthan, there are some important occasions that are worth mentioning here.  Pushkar Fair is organized every year in the month of November. Pushkar is an important pilgrimage of Rajasthan and it is also known for the largest cattle fair. There are bazaars, auctions, music, and various sports activities that mark this fair.

The Desert Festival of Jaisalmer is one of the most popular festivals of Rajasthan. It is held in the months of January and February and it marks the journey into the heart of golden Jaisalmer. There are folk performers, ballad singers, snake charmers, puppeteers and many other exciting traditional skills on display during this festival. The festival comes to an end with a show of light and sound on a moonlit night.

Gangaur festival is held in the months of March and April. This is a 18 day festival where young girls pray to Goddess Parvati for a groom of their choice and the married ladies pray for the well-being of their husbands.

Fairs and Festivals in Rajasthan:

Rajasthan is the most visited state of India. Tourists are most attracted by the fairs and festivals here. The Palace of Wheels is an experience to tourist would like to miss. The most popular fairs and festivals of Rajasthan, which are a favourite with the tourists:-

  • The Desert Festival held in Jaisalmer during the month of January and February. Tourists are attracted by the events organized by ballad singers and snake charmers. The ship of the desert draw massive crowds as camel sports and events are the main tantalizing events of this festival.
  • The Elephant Festival held in Jaipur during the month of March and April is celebrated during Holi. This festival boasts of several elephant sports and events.
  • The Gangaur Festival is celebrated in March-April throughout Rajasthan. It is an 18 day celebration when Lord Shiva and Parvati are worshipped.
  • Marwad Festival or the Maand Festival is celebrated in Jodhpur in October. This festival is a treat for lovers of Rajasthani folk dance and music.
  • Camel Festival is held in Bikaner during the month of January. Folk performances and camel sports are the limelight of this festival.
  • Teej Festival, which marks the onset of monsoon, is held in Jaipur in the rainy months of July and August. It is a women’s festival and the display of colourful clothes, mehndi application, traditional jewellery and other merriments are the main attractions.
  • Nagaur Fair of Nagaur is an animal fair organized in the months of January-February. Huge bargain of cattle, horses and camels are the main events.
  • Mewar Festival during March-April in Udaipur is celebrated to welcome the spring season.
