Makar Sankranti is one of the most important festivals celebrated in India. India is a country of diversity and such vast is its culture that each city has its own way of celebrating festivals. India is an agricultural country and Makar Sankranti is considered to be an auspicious day for farmers all over the country. Makar Sankranti is celebrated on 14th of January every year and it marks the beginning of the Harvest season and the end of the winter season.

Each city has its own style of celebrating this festival. Not only the style is different but even the name also differs in different part of the country. In Uttar Pradesh the festival is known as “Khicheri” and is considered to be an important day for taking bath in holy waters of River Ganga and Yamuna. In Punjab the festival is celebrated by great enthusiasm and zeal and is celebrated after the night of “Lohri”.

Makar Sankranti is celebrated as the beginning of the New Year by farmers all over Punjab. A bonfire is lit in various parts of the city and rituals of dance and songs are performed around the bonfire. In South India the festival is known as “Pongal” and it marks the harvest season in South. People in south make delicious recipes from rice and pulses and gifts are exchanged as a mark of happy gesture.

Also in various cities the festival is celebrated by flying kites. People exchange gifts on this day to mark a new chapter in their life and to forget all sorrows and spread love in society. Although Makar Sankranti is known by many different names but still the festival has the same importance in hearts of people and is celebrated all over the country with love and enthusiasm.
