Teej is also called Haritalika Teej and is a festival celebrated by women. It is commemorated in the Bhadrapadh month, on the third day in Shukla Paksh in the Hindu calendar, which roughly estimated is the period of August-September.

Teej Festival:

It is an important festival in states like Rajasthan and Chandigarh. It’s also prominent among the Marwari and Baniya communities. This festival, which is dedicated to Goddess Parvati celebrating her bond with Lord Shiva, is observed for matrimonial harmony, welfare of the next of kin and family, along with the cleansing and refining of both mind and soul.

Teej is a festival of swings and marks the beginning of monsoons. The cool rain saturates the otherwise scorched land and women, usually clad in green dresses, sing songs welcoming this pleasant change. The scent of blooming flowers fills the atmosphere which itself seems filled with merriment.  ‘Teej’ is a red insect which comes out of soil during monsoons, and hence the name.

During Teej women pray to Goddess Parvati for marital bliss and joy. Women and girls are presented with many dresses and gifts as a mark of respect and reverence. One day before Teej, is observed as Sinjara when girls and women put mehandi on their palms and eat desserts. Newlywed brides are gifted jewelry and other such items on this day. Also these brides return to their parents’ house on this day and spend around ten days with them, departing only after the festivities of Raksha Bandhan. (more…)
