‘Basant Utsav’ literally means ‘Celebrating the spring’ in Hindi. The tradition of celebrating Basant Utsav was first started by the Nobel winner late Bard, Rabindranath Tagore in Calcutta (now Kolkata) at Vishwabharti Shantiniketan University.

The only difference between Holi and Basant Utsav celebration is the latter is celebrated in a much dignified way. The festival holds a special significance for the people of West Bengal, since it brings a refreshing change in the atmospheric condition in the state. The festival brings with it the rejuvenating warm breeze from the south indicating the onset of summer. The Basant Utsav also heralds the new sprouting season after the harsh winter.

With such scintillating natural backdrop, Holi or Basant Utsav brings with the joy of playing with colored powders and spraying the colored liquid over others. The Bengalis believe that the Basant Utsav is the natural way to bless their live with celebrations and good spirits.
On the festival day, children indulge in the sweet treat donning the traditional Bengali attire. The dress brings to the fore the rich Bengali culture. Both boys and girls join their parents to visit their family friends and relatives.
