India is a unique country which boasts of unity among great diversities. Various languages, religions and beliefs and cultures have given rise to the celebration of various festivals throughout India. Different festivals are celebrated in different parts of India with great enthusiasm and fervour. The rituals may vary from state to state but the spirit of celebration creates an ambience of unity in the country.

Festival Celebrations in India :

Indians love to celebrate and put their souls into the preparations of the celebration of the various festivals. Onset of any festival brings about a series of rituals to be followed.

Indians are quite superstitious and non-believers or non-compliers of these rituals are few. Cleaning and decoration of homes, buying of new clothes, preparation of mouth-watering sweets and delicacies, worshipping of gods and goddesses are all integral part of celebrations in India.

All the festivals are incomplete without a fair. These fairs give an opportunity to celebrate in merriment. These fairs exhibit the local culture, folk dance and music, local craftsmanship, wide variety of food and artefacts.

In India any religious event is celebrated like a festival. Birth of the various religions saints, onset of monsoon, harvest of crops, advent of full moon, birth and death anniversary of great leaders and of course many religious events marking the victory of good over evil, are all reasons to celebrate leading to festivities. Every month of the Hindu calendar boasts of various festivals. Muslim festival like Ramadan and Eid, Sikh festivals, Christian festivals like Christmas are celebrated by all Indians, throughout the country with great enthusiasm and zest.

The most celebrated festivals are Holi (The Festival of Colours), Diwali (The Festival of Lights). The other important festivals are Raksha Bandhan, Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Republic Day, Maha Shivratri, Vasant Panchami, Maahavir Jayanti, etc. The list is endless and so is the spirit of celebrating. Every Indian thrives on these celebrations and awaits every festival great excitement and joy.
