Guru Hargobind Singh

Guru Hargobind Singh Jayanti is one of the most significant festivals of the Sikhs. This festival is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Guru Hargobind Singh, who was the sixth guru of the Sikhs. Guru Hargobind Singh Jayanti is also known by the names of ‘Gurgaddi Divas’ or ‘Guru Hargobinda Sahib’.

Guru Nanak laid the foundation of Sikh religion in late 15th century. There are about ten million followers of Sikhism in India. According to Sikh religion there were ten Gurus:

  • Guru Angad (Guru 1539-52)
  • Guru Amar Das (Guru 1552-74)
  • Guru Ram Das (Guru 1574-81)
  • Guru Arjun (Guru 1581-1606)
  • Guru Hargobind (Guru 1606-44)
  • Guru Har Rai (Guru 1644-61)
  • Guru Harkrishan (Guru 1661-64)
  • Guru Tegh Bahadur (Guru 1664-75)
  • Guru Gobind Singh (Guru 1675-1708).

Guru Hargobind Singh was on 19th June, 1595 in Guru Ki Wadali village of Amritsar. He was just eleven years old when he succeeded Guru Arjan Sahib. Guru Hargobind Singh used to carry two swords which were considered as the representations of power (shakti) and meditation (bhakti). These swords were named as ‘Piri’ meant for spiritual authority and ‘Miri’ meant for martial power. No one can forget the struggles and sacrifices made by the Sikhs for safeguarding their independence. Guru Hargobind Sahib made a great contribution towards the spiritual as well as material well being of the Sikhs. He played a major role in unifying the Sikhs and strengthening the Sikh nation. This resulted into the militarization of Sikh movement and transformation of Sikhs into soldier- saints.

On the auspicious day of Guru Hargobind Singh Jayanti thousands of Sikhs can be seen visiting the Golden Temple to offer their prayers and celebrate the occasion. Worshippers take a dip into the lake which surrounds the Golden Temple. The water of this lake is considered to be sacred and equal to the nectar by followers.
