Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi. It is one of the main Hindu festivals as this is the birthday of Lord Ganesha who is the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati.

Ganesha Chaturthi:

During this festival, Lord Ganesha is believed to shower his blessings on all his devotees on earth by bestowing his presence of earth. Ganesha is worshipped as the God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. This is the reason that no auspicious occasion begins without his pooja and his blessings. At the beginning of every major task in a person’s life, Ganesha is worshipped first.

The festival of Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated in the month of Bhaadrapada according to the Hindu calendar. The day is observed on the shukla chaturthi or the fourth day of waxing moon period. Usually the date according to Western calendar falls between August 20 and September 22. The festival of Gamesha Chaturthi lasts for ten days.

It begins of forth day of waxing moon while it ends on the fourteenth day of waxing moon period. This day is called Anant Chaturdashi. Though the festival is celebrated across the country, it is most elaborate in western and southern part of the country. The festival is also celebrated outside the country in Nepal. The Hindus in the United States, Canada and Fiji also celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi with enthusiasm.

The artistic clay models of Ganesha are made about two to three months prior to the festival. They are well decorated and give various poses by the artisans. The size of Ganesh idols many vary according to the choice of people. The festival begins with the installation of Ganesha idol in homes where a priest invokes God by chanting mantas. The festivals comes to an end on the eleventh day when the statue of taken to river or sea through processions and immersed in waters.

A Story Linked With Lord Ganesha:

It is described in the Shiv Puran that how he got a head of Elephant. According to Shiv Purana, goddess Parvati had created a living child from the soil. She said him for her security that anyone must be not come in her palace till the finished of her bathing. When lord Shiva came back, he wants to enter into the palace but lord Ganesha stopped him to enter into the palace. To see this lord shiva became angry and he cut the head of lord Ganesha.

When goddess parvati saw her child without head, she became unhappy and crying for her son. To pacify her lord Shiva sent his force to carry any first living being who had faced into the north direction. His force got a elephant as a first living being so they returned with the head of elephant. This head was attached to the neck of the boy. Hence he is known as a Ganapati.
