Sikkim is one of the beautiful states of India which is famous for its vibrant festivities and celebrations. Sikkim consists of three ethnic communities, Nepalese, Bhutia and Lepchas. All these communities in Sikkim have their own festivals. These colorful and lively festivals portray a rich cultural heritage of Sikkim. Sikkim Festival has a unique characteristic of colorful dance and music.

Some of the significant Sikkim Festivals are:

Maghe Sankranti Mela:

This festival is celebrated from 13th to 15th of January every year on the first day of Magh. Fairs are held at places like Jorethang, Saramsa and Singtam. In this festival the local people can be seen in joyful mood.

Losoong Festival:

This is one of the popular Sikkim Festivals which represents the conclusion of 10th month of Tibetan Year. During this festival people pray for better prospects and good harvest. Chaam perform dance at monasteries of Rumtek, Tsu-La-Khang and Phodong. One of the major attractions of this festival is the Archery competition.

Saga Dawa:

This festival is also one of the major Sikkim Festivals. It falls on 15th day of 4th Tibetan month at the time of full moon. This festival is meant for the purpose of celebrating the birth, enlightenment and nirvana of Lord Buddha.


This Sikkim festival is also a popular festival in Sikkim which is celebrated on the month of January. This festival takes place at Tashiding monastery in West Sikkim. In this festival the Lamas of the monastery open the pot containing the holy water. The level of water in this pot foretells the future to come.
