The Tamil calendar is a lunar .It is also used in Pondicherry. The Tamil population in Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius and Sri Lanka uses Tamil calendar. The Tamil calendar is also used by Telugu speaking people in Tamil Nadu. It is used today for cultural, religious and agricultural. The Tamil calendar is based on the standard Hindu solar calendar. The Tamil New Year is The Varushapirapu. It is also used in Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Manipur, Nepal, Rajasthan and Punjab. There are several festivals based on the Tamil Hindu calendar.

Celebrating Tamil New Year:

The Tamil New Year falls on 14 April of the year. 14 April marks the first day of the traditional Tamil calendar. It remains



a public holiday in both Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.  It is a time for celebrating new and prosperous beginnings. The 14th of April is the beginning of the first month Chithrai of the Tamil year, which is celebrated as the New Year and is known as “Chithrai Vishu”. Varusham is the Tamil word for “year” and ‘Pirapu’ can be translated as the “birth” or “are beginning” of an event.

On this day the Creator of the world Lord Brahma started creation. On the Tamil New Year’s Day, Pooja are performed in various temples. Tamil New Year is celebrated between April and May.

The people wishes for their near and dear ones. This particular act is believed to bring in good luck for the members of the family. People start the Tamil New Year by watching auspicious items like silver and gold jewellery, flowers, fruits and vegetables, nuts, betel leaves etc. The morning prayers start on New Year morning. The preparations for the New Year start well in advance. The entrances of

the houses decorated with kolams, red mangoes and neem flowers are offered to Gods and Goddesses which indicate success and growth. Tamils give a start to their year with an herbal bath. The game of coconut is played during the New Year. Handcart races are equally enjoyed on this evening. This festival season is a great time and establishing relationship with your near and dear ones.
